Salt Lake & Davis County

April 2008

April's Meeting

Our April meeting will be held on April 9th , 7:00pm in the Zephyr Room at the Rio Grande Building (300 South Rio Grande, I mean it this time!).  This month Danny Mullins will be speaking to us about the Milford Flats burn survey which he and his company have been conducting all winter.  This project is being conducted in the large area the burned in a wildfire last summer.  USAS was invited to be a consulting party at the monthly update meetings about the survey and the results.  This project is especially interesting due to its proximity to the Black Rock obsidian source, and the surrounding prehistoric lithic landscape that requires some creative survey methods.

2008 Dues

It’s that time of year again!  Show your support to the Salt Lake-Davis Chapter by renewing your dues.  They are $20 for an individual or $25 for a family. This membership also includes a copy of the 2008 Utah Archaeology journal.  Chapter dues can be paid to Jane Stone at the next meeting or can be mailed to her at 2209 Monarch Drive Park City, Utah 84060.

2008 USAS/UPAC Convention

An updated schedule of events for the 2008 USAS/UPAC Convention is available on our website http://www.utaharchaeology.org/news.html.  Accommodations are limited so if you plan on attending, make your reservations soon.

11,000 years in 6 hours

Ever wanted to know more about Utah prehistory? This class will introduce the concept of archaeology, the prehistoric cultures of Utah and we’ll discuss some ongoing projects in the Salt Lake area and around the state of Utah.  The class will be held on Saturday, April 12 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

The class is free and open to the public.  Kids, 4th grade and up, and up are invited if accompanied by an adult.  However, space is limited so you must pre-register by sending an email to rrood@utah.gov with “April Class” in the subject line of the email.  If you want, you may call Assistant State Archaeologist Ron Rood at 801-533-3564 to pre-register.  This class would be great for all new USAS members who want to get some basic information about the archaeology of Utah.

2008 Prehistory Week

This year Prehistory Week will be May 3-10, with the traditional open house on May 3rd.  Additional details about this year’s activities can be found at http://history.utah.gov/archaeology/public_archaeology/utah_prehistory_week/index.html

New this year is a public art show to showcase prehistory-inspired art.  The show will be April 18th-May 10th in the Rio Grande Gallery.  Entries will be accepted through March 15th if you have something you’d like to include.  Examples include photographs of archaeology, rock art, or persons doing archaeology; replicas of artifacts; or photographs of historical buildings.  Entries need to be submitted to Ron Rood at State History.

Volunteer Construction Monitors

The Fremont Indian State Park is replacing a water line and is requesting any volunteers to help monitor the construction trenches for cultural resources. Individuals need not be professional archaeologists, but those with experience in monitoring construction for cultural resources or experience in archaeological survey and excavation will be considered as volunteers on the project

Many volunteers are needed, as the construction schedule is seven days a week, sun up to sun down, and excavation will likely be in 2-3 places at once. Construction should begin either the last week in March or the first week in April and is expected to continue for about 3-4 weeks. However, the deadline for construction is May 17. Individuals who are interested in volunteering on this project should contact Kari Carlisle at Fremont Indian State Park and be ready to provide information on experience and days and times available to be onsite.

USAS Yahoo! Group

USAS now has a Yahoo! Group! If you already have a Yahoo! ID, the group can be accessed through http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/USAS-group and select “Join This Group”.  The group will allow for greater communication on a state-wide level and hopefully keep us more in tune with the other chapters.  Sign in and check it out!
