USAS Executive Meeting
On Saturday March 15 several members of USAS gathered at the CEU Prehistoric Museum. This meeting was opened to all USAS members to discuss several issues that needed to be discussed and voted on.
Darrell and Marty Thomas, Co-Presidents welcomed and thanked everyone for attending. After the last meeting minutes and treasurer’s reports were given, they asked Chanel Atwood to report on the upcoming State Convention that is to be held in Price on June 5-8.
A mock-up draft of the activities was passed out to the group outlining the presentations, tours, dinners, keynote speakers and other information. They all expressed a great deal of interest and were told that the finished document would be mailed to all USAS members by the end of next week. The deadline to register and get it mailed back is May 19.
Among other items to be discussed were the issues that are going on in Nine Mile Canyon. Pam Miller gave an explanation of why the Nine Mile Canyon Coalition was so alarmed about the B.L.M’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement of the West Tavaputs Plateau and the Natural Gas Full Field Development Plan.
There have been three nights of public meetings that she and other CVAS/Nine Mile Coalition members have attended. They listened, asked the right questions, and voiced their concerns over the heavy industrial traffic that leaves huge clouds of dust that is impacting the cultural resources in the canyon. The BLM representatives did not adequately answer these questions, they urged them to write their concerns down and turn them in before May 1.
Pam asked the USAS group to please support the efforts of the Nine Mile Canyon Coalition to write letters and comments to try and stop the draft from going forward until all the concerns have been have been met. A motion was made by Neil West; Salt Lake/Davis Chapter member who is also Vice-President of USAS, the motion was seconded. The vote was taken and it passed.
Members of CVAS who attended this meeting were Mark Connolly, Alan Green, Chanel Atwood, Pam Miller, Fred and Diane Gorman Jenkins, Renee Barlow, and Margene Hackney.
